Buy or build your back yard bin for composting.  Back yard composting is simple and easy to do!  Keep your kitchen scraps out of the landfill and make your compost.  There are many ways to compost at home and many benefits to "doing it yourself".  You get to keep the compost to use in your garden.  It eliminates the expense of paying for a service to do it for you.  It also is earth-friendly since it requires no transportation to a commercial composting facility!  An added benefit...you can compost at home even during the winter.  Here is a link from Cornell University on with plans for building your bin: https://ecommons.cornell.edu/bitstream/handle/1813/11729/Designs%20for%20Composting%20Systems%20REVISED.pdf?sequence=18

The City of Elmhurst offers an option for people who want to be earth-friendly but who don't have the room or the desire for a compost container or bin in their back yard.  The City of Elmhurst provides curbside kitchen and yard waste pick up on the same day as your regular garbage pick-up.  There is an additional fee but keep in mind that you would be saving money on yard waste stickers and bags!  Another option would be to share the compost toter with one or two of your neighbors which you would need to set up on your own.  Everyone would benefit by saving money and helping the planet.  Here is the link for the City of Elmhurst's website:https://www.elmhurst.org/1609/Organics-Waste.
