What is composting?

Composting is the process where organic matter is broken down naturally, using oxygen and microorganisms, resulting in the production of compost.  It is a means of returning nutrients from food waste and yard waste to the soil.  It diverts tons of food scraps and yard waste from landfills in the United States.

Composting Bins

Composting bins come in many forms.  Here are several examples of Backyard Compost Bins!  The black compost bin is very easy to use.  It has vents that allow air to energy for the oxygen necessary for the decomposition of the kitchen scraps.  No bottom allows worms to enter and speed up the process.  The home-built composter has multiple bins.  This system was made by my brother-in-law, Keith Fitzgibbons, using plans from Cornell University.  He is a serious gardener along with his wife, Jenny.  There are many kinds of compost bins available for purchase.  Some communities, such as Lombard, Illinois, offer grants to residents who purchase compost bins.  For more information on the composting process, check out the English gardener Charles Dowding.  Here is a link to one of his videos on composting:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf6CGj7xpFE
